TASER OPERATOR COURSE

OVERVIEW: To provide the basic operational theory and training necessary to reasonably, safely, and effectively operate TASER energy weapons. 

ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Without the aid of references, in accordance with the detailed lesson plan and manual, a certified trained user will accomplish the following: 

1. Describe the technology, nomenclature, and operation of the TASER energy weapons.
2. Describe the nomenclature and operation of the TASER energy weapon cartridges.
3. Explain the proper care and troubleshooting techniques for each TASER energy weapon.
4. Explain Smart Use Considerations for TASER energy weapons.
5. Explain the Tactical Considerations associated with TASER energy weapon use.
6. Explain proper probe placement and preferred target areas.
7. Understand factors influencing TASER energy weapon incapacitation.
8. Demonstrate safe handling of TASER energy weapons.

DESCRIPTION: This course will provide introductory training and practical applications for TASER conducted energy weapons (CEWs), used for de-escalation and self defense. Officers will be taught nomenclature, mechanics, and operation of the TASER as an alternative on the force continuum. Our AXON certified trainers provide expert instruction to security professionals and individuals in carrying, storing, deploying, and operating TASER CEWs safely and effectively. Training provides an in-depth understanding of how a Taser works, how it should be employed and when it should be used. The Taser training course is divided into three key sections, which form a comprehensive curriculum; these include lecture, demonstration and scenario training.

METHOD / MEDIA:  This class will be taught by the lecture / demonstration / scenario method. This course can be also be delivered in a blended learning format which consists of online pre-work, online examination, and in-person practical exercises.

EVALUATION:  Topics from this class will be evaluated via written tests and via performance checklist during the practical applications conducted during the class. 

CERTIFICATION: Students, upon successfully completing the required components to the course, will receive a course certificate and proficiency certificate card certifying them as a TASER energy weapon operator.  Operator certification is valid for one calendar year.

DESCRIPTION: The course will provide officers with the basic skills, training, and knowledge to safely and effectively utilize the TASER CEW. The course will review the Continuum of Force, transitions, explain the technology associated with TASER devices, describe the nomenclature and operation of TASER devices and the Taser Smart cartridge, explain the proper care and troubleshooting techniques, explain CEW Smart Use Considerations, CEW medical overview, CEW warnings, explain the targeting and Tactical Considerations associated with CEW use, explain proper probe placement and aiming requirements and demonstrate safe handling of CEWs. As part of the learning process, the students will be exposed to high-stress scenarios, performance drills, written, performance and functionality tests, along with deploying cartridges in the preferred target zones.
